Texas doesn't license roofers. Here's what to ask for instead.
Texas has no statewide license for roofing contractors. So when a roofer says "licensed", the state has not checked anything. These are the things that do protect you.
1. A certificate of insurance, from their agent
Ask for their general liability insurance certificate, sent to you by their insurance agent rather than handed over by the roofer. If someone gets hurt or your home gets damaged, this is what pays.
2. Ask who covers the crew
Texas is the only state where most private employers can choose not to carry workers' compensation. Ask whether the people on your roof are covered.
3. Everything in writing
- A written contract with the price, the materials and the start date.
- A written workmanship warranty from the roofer. Ask how many years and what it covers.
- The manufacturer's warranty on the shingles or metal. Ask who registers it.
4. A badge you can look up yourself

5. Permits

Texas Insurance Code chapter 707 prohibits a contractor from offering to pay, waive or rebate your insurance deductible. A roofer who offers to "cover your deductible" is offering something the law does not allow.
