Roof leaking? Do this first.

These steps come from the Texas Department of Insurance. They protect your home and your insurance claim.

1. Write down when it started

Note the date and time you first saw the damage, and what the weather was like.

2. Take pictures and video

Photograph the damage inside and outside before anything is repaired.

3. Stop more damage with a temporary fix

A tarp over a hole in the roof, covered windows, and removing standing water. These keep it from getting worse.

4. Keep a list and every receipt

List the damage inside and outside the house, and save the receipts for anything you buy to protect it, including the tarp.

5. Call your insurance company

Report it as soon as you can. Most policies have a deadline for reporting damage. Here is how the claim works.
